ACCTG 1A
Principles of Accounting I, Financial Accounting
Units: 4
Prerequisites: None
Recommended preparation: ACCTG 200A or Accounting Experience

  • This course is a requirement for the Accounting Career Certificate and/or Associate of Arts
  • This course has No Prerequisites . . . BUT . . . it is strongly recommended that you have some accounting background before sitting for this course.

This is a fast-paced course. The first third of the class brings the student from basic debits and credits to producing Financial Statements for both service businesses AND merchandisers. The bar rises steeply in the following two thirds of the semester as we travel down the Balance Sheet account-by-account exploring the requirements for accounting of Corporate entities under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

ACCTG 1B
Principles of Accounting II, Managerial Accounting
Units: 4
Prerequisites: ACCTG 1A
Recommended preparation: ACCTG 1A or Accounting Experience

  • Requirement for the Accounting Career Certificate and/or Associate of Arts
  • They say that the reward for completing ACCTG 1A  is that you get to take ACCTG 1B

In ACCTG 1A you learned how to prepare Financial Statements.  In ACCTG 1B you will get techniques for interpreting them. In 1A you produced financial information for the investors and creditors of the business.  In 1B the focus is providing USEFUL financial information to help MANAGE the company.

  • Should I lease or buy?
  • Should we expand operations?

Introduction to Accounting

  • If you have never had accounting before, this is the course for you!
  • If ACCTG 1A moved too fast for you, don’t give up on the profession, this is the course for you!
  • If you want to be more successful in ACCTG 1A and the rest of the curriculum, this is the course for you!
  • If you want to be more interesting at parties, this is the course for you!
  • Get the basics of Accounting and see if Accounting is for you.

As you can see, this course is designed for student success. This course will prepare you for the rigors of the Accounting major. This course will prepare you to run your own business. This course will prepare you to better understand the Accounting function for success in your current profession. If you want to be prepared for Accounting success, begin with Acctg 200A.

Fundamentals of Tax

Introductory course to preparing Federal and State income tax returns for individuals. The course is up to date with the latest IRS code and relevant for all business majors. The old adage is that the only certainty in life is death and taxes. Knowing more about taxes could payoff for life.

Computerized General Ledger Accounting
Units: 2
Prerequisites: ACCTG 200A or ACCTG 1A

Obtain hands-on experience with the robust and popular computerized accounting system, Peachtree.

Peachtree is a fully automated accounting system used by many small to mid-size businesses. 

Peechtree takes a traditional approach to accounting and allows you to practice the techniques you learned in Financial Accounting.
TRUTH:  “If you know one computerized accounting system, you know a LITTLE about them all”
  Computerized accounting systems differ greatly, but they all have to do similar tasks.  If you learn what Peachtree can do, when you sit in front of MAS90, Solomon, PeopleSoft, or other popular systems you will know the type of reports and functions that have to be there.  Your proficiency with these other systems will develop rapidly.

STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
  Learn to use the most popular small business accounting software in the country! Unlike traditional accounting systems, Quickbooks requires much less accounting knowledge. The user fills in familiar checks, invoices, and forms on-screen and the program handles the math and double entry accounting behind the scenes.
NO prior accounting knowledge required!
  No prerequisites. Topics include: company set-up, inventory, invoicing, payment processing, working with bank accounts, entering and paying bills, creating reports, and a little on payroll.
Hands-on exposure!
  Using new IBM Laptops, students will have hands-on exposure to the major features of the Quickbooks software accompanied by instruction in the accounting concepts being employed.

This course is designed for students interested in learning concepts and skills relevant to effective
personal financial management. These topics include saving, budgeting, debt management, retirement planning, insurance, home buying, investment and estate planning. This is a hands on course involving problem solving in the above areas.
