Casey Stengel once said that "the secret to managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided."

There's probably something to be said about that, however this introductory course will present a much broader look at Management as an ongoing process within an organization by focusing on the traditional Management tasks of resource planning, organizing, influencing and controlling. You will have the opportunity to develop the basic skills necessary for both entry and mid-level management positions.

Included in your study of the Management function will be many of the important challenges faced by today's managers, such as leadership, diversity, quality, ethics/social responsibility and the global environment. Issues concerning innovation and technology will also play an important role in your discussions.

Most experts agree that managing an organization's scarce resources (including capital, financial, informational, time and human resources) can be very challenging. What you will learn in this course will be extremely useful as you focus on the acquisition, maintenance, and motivation of an organization's Human Resources for the purpose of achieving both organizational and individual goals.

Skills learned in this course will be beneficial for entry and mid-level Human Resource professionals as well as other supervisors/managers.

The number of small businesses in America in 2005 reached a new high of 25.85 million, according to the SBA. The SBA report counts 6 million small firms with employees and close to 20 million sole proprietorships. MGMT 80 will look at this very important segment of the economy from both the Entrepreneurial focus and the Small Business Management focus.

After developing an understanding of the entrepreneurial elements of starting a small business, such as types of business ownership, the attributes of a successful entrepreneur and the importance of business plans, you will focus on the traditional management skills necessary to extend the life of the startup. These skills will be vital in starting a small business but can also be useful for both entry and mid-level management positions.

In addition to learning how to write a business plan, your study of small business management will provide some focus on other important challenges faced by owners/managers, such as diversity, quality, ethics and the global environment. Issues concerning innovation and technology will also play an important role in all of these discussions.
